In Sunday, April 7, 31 teams from 19 colleges across North American competed in the ACBL’s Spring College Bridge Online Special Team Tournament, with the top three colleges receiving travel packages to attend and compete in the 2019 Collegiate Bridge Bowl in Las Vegas.
“It’s been very exciting to see the growth in our college teams since we first began holding these special tournaments,” said Stephanie Threlkeld, education and communications manager for the ACBL. “It’s inspiring to see the passion and commitment these young players have for the game as well as how much fun they have.”
Northwestern University’s team captained by Kyle Rockoff topped the field with a final score of 93 VPs. Columbia University’s team led by Yang Xu finished in second with 89 VPs. The University of Chicago, which won a travel package in the February team tournament, came in third with 87 VPs but was not eligible for a second travel package. After a tie-breaker, Georgia Institute of Technology’s Georgia Tech Gold team – captained by Santhosh Karnik – came in fourth place over Princeton University’s team and secured the third travel package with 86 VPs.
The ACBL will award six travel packages to college pairs in its inaugural Stratified Pairs Online Special Tournament on Sunday, April 14. Those receiving awards will be able to compete in the Stratified Pairs Championship during the Collegiate Bridge Bowl.
“We’ve had great feedback from our members on adding this new event to the Collegiate Bridge Bowl lineup,” Threlkeld said. “It’s going to offer newer players – or players from schools who don’t have enough players to have a team – a chance to compete at a higher level and connect with other collegiate bridge players from around the country.”
