Plan the play for South.

South chose a routine plan to score today’s game, but it didn’t work, He would have been placed had he put dummy’s entries to wiser use. South took the first diamond in dummy and drew three rounds of trumps, overtaking dummy’s queen with his king. A low club was led to dummy’s 10, won by east’s jack. East returned a diamond, establishing a defensive winner in that suit. South then ruffed a club and exited with his last diamond to West’s jack. South was forced to ruff West’s last diamond, and it was now or never with the spades. A spade was led to the ace and back to the queen to no avail. West scored two spades and a diamond, and East took a club, down one. South makes his game by using dummy’s entries to establish and cash dummy’s fifth club. At trick two, a low club should be led from dummy and the diamond return is won in dummy. A club is ruffed and dummy is entered twice in trump for two more club ruffs, establishing the fifth club. The last trump is now drawn and dummy’s A provides the entry to cash the fifth club while South discards a losing spade. The full deal:
