Superaccepting over 1NT
I recommend that
opener almost always superaccept with the cheapest available step, 1NT-P-
2-P-
2 or 1NT-P-
2-P-2NT; I feel it’s more important to leave responder room to show his second suit for game or slam exploration, than for opener to waste the whole 3-level to shut out an overcall.
I wouldn’t mind playing the cheapest step as my only superaccept. Most of my partners want me to do more than that, so I reluctantly agree to show a side worthless doubleton as opener if I have one.
There’s one further refinement I think is important. Notice that over 1NT-P-
2, when opener bids
2, 2NT, or
3, there is room for responder to “retransfer” (force opener to be declarer) with a
3 rebid. Over 1NT-P-
2-P-
3 and 1NT-P-
2-P-
3 there isn’t. I play the “3M-1” superaccept as
a superaccepting hand with no tenaces, like:
Jxxx Axxx AKx Ax.
If reponder holds any stray K-J or Q-T combinations, the lead should come up to
his hand.
Therefore, my complete superaccept system over 1NT-P-
2:
- 2 Any hand without 4-card support, and any 4-3-3-3 hand.
- 2 Any hand with 4-card support, not qualified for one of the higher superaccepts.
- 2NT 4-card support, x-x in spades.
- 3 4-card support, x-x in clubs.
- 3 4-card support, no tenaces, forcing responder to be declarer.
- 3 4-card support, x-x in diamonds.
Similarly over 1NT-P-
2:
- 2 Any hand without 4-card support, and any 4-3-3-3 hand.
- 2NT Any hand with 4-card support, not qualified for one of the higher superaccepts.
- 3 4-card support, x-x in clubs.
- 3 4-card support, x-x in diamonds.
- 3 4-card support, no tenaces, forcing responder to be declarer.
- 3 4-card support, x-x in hearts.
