“It is folly to bolt a door with a boiled carrot” English proverb West led the J. East overtook West’s J and played two more high clubs. Plan the play. Whenever your trump holding appears most secure, take a second look. Perhaps an alternative line of play might come into view. When this hand was played, South thought his trump holding impregnable and ruffed contemptuously with his jack. This ill-conceived manoeuver prevented the overruff but it also cost the game. South later had concede a trump loser as well as a heart loser, and the game fell short by one. South has a cinch play available when East leads the third club. Instead of preventing an overruff South should discard his unavoidable heart loser. South’s trumps then remain strong enough to counter any move by East. If East shifts to a red suit, South wins and easily draws trumps. If East continues with a fourth club, dummy´s king of trump neutralizes West´s holding an the defenders cannot score a trump trick.
