Before the first board ended the vugraph operator wrote: both teams are in contention for the intermediate finals tomorrow. A big win would help a lot.The first board hit the table and generated the first swing of the match.
Croatia stopped before game and made 10 tricks, Russia looked deeper into the hand and arrived to the spade game, winning 5 IMPs for the effort.
The match was Russia 8 – Croatia 3 when board 16 appeared: Croatia N/S stayed low and won their 2contract, Russia was a bit more risky and declared the spade game, Croatia doubled for one down, this meant 8 IMPs for Croatia.
Board 20
This board defined the match, and crowned Russia as the winner:
West opened his hand showing a two weak hand in hearts and North showed a good hand with clubs bidding 3, South’s cue-bid forced N/S to game, North chose to say 3NT showing heart control, but partner continued showing his spade suit.
Now came a long thought from North…while we all were waiting for his bid these were BBO comments:
vugraphzmx→ 6 and 6 are both fine
dburn→Mesa : 4 isn’t, though
vugraphzmx→ but will north make another bid and if so, will south raise?
Everybody were expecting for North continuation, when he decided to show his extra length in clubs. After some other interactions showing diamonds and spades control the partnership arrived to the club slam.
The heart lead was the only trick for the defense, all the rest was for Russia.
At the other table the Croatia´s couple only played game.
The match ended Russia 26 – Croatia 10
During the match some of the Russia players met with their captain to watch the hands and at the end celebrated the victory.
